Robert “Bob” Arum was born on December 8, 1931 in Brooklyn, New York. His family was Jewish and his grandparents were immigrants from Eastern Europe. Arum studied at Erasmus Hall High School and graduated from New York University in 1953 with a degree in law. He then attended Harvard Law School and graduated in 1956 with a Juris Doctor degree.

After graduating law school, Arum worked as an attorney in the tax division of the U.S. Department of Justice.
